Stop confusing predictive power with physical understanding.
Quantum mechanics is brilliant mathematics. It is not entitled to immunity from the oldest question in physics: what is actually happening?
A formalism that predicts the world is valuable. A culture that forbids asking what the formalism describes is intellectually bankrupt.
1. Quantum mechanics won the calculation war. Then it overclaimed the peace.
The equations worked so well that a historical contingency hardened into an ontological monopoly. Instead of saying “this formalism predicts these observations,” textbooks drifted into “this is how reality must be.” Those are different statements. The second was never licensed by the first.
2. Mystery is not a mechanism.
The double slit is not explained by renaming the probability amplitude a wavefunction and then announcing that classical explanation is impossible. Measurement is not explained by writing a projection postulate next to unitary evolution. Randomness is not explained by calling it fundamental. Those moves may organize predictions. They do not disclose physical machinery.
3. Interpretive sprawl is not conceptual completion.
Copenhagen says one thing about reality, many-worlds another, pilot-wave theory another, QBism another, relational approaches another. The shared mathematics is formidable; the shared ontology is nonexistent. A theory that still hosts mutually incompatible stories about what exists has not settled what exists.
4. “Classical” does not mean 1900.
Classical reconstruction means objective physical variables: fields, currents, charge densities, extended matter, nonlinear media, stochastic backgrounds, detector dynamics, memory, topology, resonance and global boundary structure. Pretending the only alternative to Hilbert-space ontology is a billiard-ball electron in a Victorian ether is a caricature, not an argument.
5. The failure of a toy model proves the failure of that toy model.
Rayleigh–Jeans is not every classical statistical theory. Drude is not every matter theory. Newtonian point particles are not every wave theory. Standard semiclassical photodetection is not every detector dynamics. Bell-local measurement-independent hidden variables are not every realist ontology.
6. ℏ is not a metaphysical branding iron.
A constant with dimensions of action does not automatically imply collapse, irreducible probability or a fundamental wavefunction. If an objective continuous theory contains the same empirical scale, calling it “quantum in disguise” is not criticism. It is semantic border control.
7. Bell is not a priestly prohibition.
Bell is one of the great clarifications in physics because it tells us exactly which conjunction of assumptions fails. Good. Then write those assumptions on the wall. Do not silently turn a theorem about factorization and measurement independence into the sentence “objective reality is impossible.”
8. The measurement problem is a wound, not a feature.
A theory that evolves one way until a measurement and another way when a measurement occurs owes us an account of what a measurement physically is. Hiding the cut inside “observer,” “apparatus,” “decoherence” or “branching” without a single agreed ontology does not close the wound. It changes the dressing.
9. We reject the cult of incomprehensibility.
Adam Forrest Kay’s Escape from Shadow Physics attacks the tradition that turned explanatory surrender into sophistication. We agree with the target. Physics should not congratulate itself for being impossible to picture, impossible to explain, or impossible to reduce to causal structure. “Nobody understands quantum mechanics” is not a victory slogan. It is an overdue research brief.
10. AI removes the old excuse.
For a century, the search space of nonlinear stochastic field theories was too large for human analytic labor. That excuse is weakening. We can now generate candidate dynamics, solve them numerically, attack them with experimental data, preserve every failure and mutate the survivors. What used to be metaphysical argument can become model search.
11. The project is allowed to lose.
Hydrogen self-ionization stays red. Full-trace HBT failures stay red. Missing Bell mechanisms stay red. That is not moderation; it is ammunition. A polemic that hides its failures is propaganda. A polemic that publishes them can become a research program.
12. The burden of proof has changed.
From now on, “uniquely quantum” is never the premise. It is the prize. To earn it, one must show that the strongest explicit objective reconstructions fail—not merely that the first crude classical model in a textbook failed in 1905.
We refuse to inherit a century-old declaration of impossibility as if it were an experimental result.
