Stop mistaking incomprehension for depth.

Quantum mechanics predicts with terrifying accuracy. Its interpretive culture then performs a second trick: it converts that predictive success into permission not to explain what is physically happening.

A black box that predicts the right number is not automatically a transparent account of reality.

Adam Forrest Kay calls the resulting culture Shadow Physics: the century-long habit of treating causal, spatial and objective explanation as childish baggage once the quantum algorithm gives the correct probabilities. His target is not arithmetic. It is the retreat from intelligibility.

The sleight of hand

First a restricted classical model fails. Then the failure is inflated into a funeral for every possible objective field theory. Then the surviving quantum formalism is declared complete. Finally, any demand for a deeper mechanism is branded metaphysics. That is not a deduction. It is an institutionalized shortcut.

Kay collects the extraordinary language by which this shortcut became respectable: Feynman declaring the double slit impossible to explain classically, textbook writers telling students that attempts at mechanism are futile, and generations of physicists treating conceptual opacity as a badge of sophistication. The mystery is not merely tolerated. It is defended.

The interpretation industry is evidence of unfinished business.

If one physical theory requires Copenhagen, many-worlds, relationalism, QBism, consistent histories, spontaneous collapse, pilot waves and still more interpretive machinery to answer the elementary question what exists?, then the problem has not disappeared. It has been administratively relocated.

The usual defense is that all this metaphysical sprawl is harmless because the calculations work. Exactly. That is the indictment. A century of spectacular calculation has made it easy to forget that a predictive formalism and a physical explanation are different products.

Antirealism is not a discovery made by a detector.

No apparatus has ever printed the words “objective reality does not exist.” Detectors register voltages, tracks, spectra, arrival times and correlations. Antirealism is an interpretation placed over those records. So are branching universes, consciousness-driven collapse and the claim that properties become real only in measurement.

These may be philosophical responses to the formalism. They are not raw observations. Presenting them as if experiment directly forced them is ontology smuggled in under a laboratory coat.

“Shut up and calculate” was an abdication, not a solution.

Physics once regarded mechanism as a triumph: pressure became molecular motion, heat became statistical dynamics, celestial regularities became gravitational mechanics. Quantum orthodoxy normalized the opposite move. When mechanism became difficult, difficulty itself was promoted into a law of nature.

That is the century’s most expensive category error:failing to find a mechanism is not the same thing as proving there is no mechanism.

The metaphysical bill kept growing.

Once completeness is declared, every unresolved conceptual contradiction has to be paid somewhere else. The wavefunction becomes physically real in an enormous configuration space, or reality branches without observable recombination, or measurement acquires a special rule, or causality is loosened, or the observer is elevated into the machinery. The formalism is protected; reality is made stranger instead.

Classical Reconstruction reverses that priority. We will spend complexity on explicit fields, sources, detectors, boundary conditions and dynamics before spending it on invisible worlds.

And when an impossibility theorem says “stop”?

We read the assumptions. Every theorem forbids a model class, not imagination itself. Bell excludes a powerful conjunction of locality and measurement independence; it does not erase every realist ontology. Antibunching kills standard positive-intensity photodetection; it does not magically prove that no nonlinear material detector dynamics can ever generate the event process. The burden is mathematical, not ceremonial.

Our accusation is simple.

Quantum mechanics became so successful at calculation that physics tolerated a collapse in explanatory ambition. The resulting culture too often treats the absence of mechanism as fundamental, the multiplication of interpretations as profundity, and the demand for ordinary intelligibility as naïveté.

We are not asking quantum mechanics for permission to investigate what lies beneath it.

This project assumes the opposite research posture: reality is allowed to be intelligible until experiment—not etiquette, authority, or inherited vocabulary—proves otherwise.
