The catastrophe that nature never had.
The ultraviolet catastrophe was a catastrophe of a model, not an observation of the world.
The familiar derivation assigns kT to every cavity mode. Because mode density rises as ν², the Rayleigh–Jeans energy density diverges at high frequency. Nature does not diverge. The model does.
The standard historical lesson is that this killed classical physics and forced quantization. That lesson is too broad. Timothy Boyer published explicitly classical electrodynamic derivations of the Planck spectrum after adding Lorentz-invariant zero-point radiation as a boundary condition of Maxwell theory. In that program, ℏ fixes the scale of a continuous random field rather than counting photons.
Rayleigh–Jeans disproves unconditional equipartition across electromagnetic modes. It does not logically exhaust classical field theory.
Why this case matters
This is not merely an alternate formula. It exposes the historical move at the center of the reconstruction project: take one restricted classical statistical assumption, watch it fail, then silently promote that failure into “classical physics is impossible.” Once a later classical program recovers the target law, the impossibility claim is gone even if that program later fails somewhere else.
